About Karori | Te Māhanga Library
As a large and busy suburban branch of the Wellington City Libraries network, Te Māhanga Karori Library offers a substantial and broad lending collection of fiction, non-fiction, magazines, graphic novels, world language collections, and audio-visual material for all ages. In addition to its regular lending collections,
the library also provides Ngā kohikohinga mauri, a selection of special collections.
These include:
Kohikohinga Māori: a lending collection of Māori materials
Kurapae: a selection of highly in-demand book titles that cannot be reserved
Kete: a range of specially curated collections designed for book groups, learners of te reo Māori, and themed collections for tamariki
Kohinga Reo o te Ao/World Language Collection
World Language collections – a diverse and growing range of books in world languages for both children and adults
Kemu/Boardgames - a range of modern boardgames that can be enjoyed by families, casual gamers, and hobbyists alike
Vinyl collection
Minoa tētehi papahiko - iPad lending service
Regular programming and special events for tamariki include Baby Rock and Rhyme, storytime, STEAM sessions, and school holiday activities. Several community groups utilise the library spaces for their meetings; Author talks, and literary events are also often hosted on site.
The libraries’ given Māori name Te Māhanga refers to the Karori stream network which flows from the surrounding hills. The spirit of Karori’s natural environment is reflected also in the paving artwork and abstract mural outside the library square.
