The Hastings War Memorial Library is further strengthening its unique role as both a community library and a war memorial at the heart of Heretaunga, becoming an official Poppy Place.
The signage recognises the library’s unique place in the community as both a centre of learning and a living memorial. Established as a war memorial to honour those who served their country, the library continues to preserve and share stories of service and sacrifice for future generations.
The red poppy is an enduring symbol of remembrance throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and across the Commonwealth. Its inclusion in the library’s signage helps make the building’s memorial purpose more visible and meaningful for visitors.
Historian and Hastings deputy mayor Michael Fowler said becoming a Poppy Place was a natural fit for the library.
"The Hastings and District War Memorial Library is much more than a library. It was built as a memorial to those who served, and becoming a Poppy Place helps tell that story more clearly to our community and visitors. The poppy is an enduring symbol of remembrance, and we are proud to incorporate it into the signage."
One of only five Halls of Memories in New Zealand, the space is a significant heritage feature that commemorates local servicemen and has long provided a place for reflection and remembrance.
The area is currently closed to the public while earthquake strengthening work is carried out to ensure the space can be preserved for future generations. This work is anticipated to be complete in November this year.
As part of the project, considerable care has been taken to protect the hall's nationally significant heritage features. The celebrated Peter McIntyre mural remains carefully covered with specialist protective materials throughout the construction programme. The surviving original glass window etchings designed by McIntyre have also been removed and placed in secure storage for safekeeping.
"Preserving the Hall of Memories is about more than strengthening a building," Mr Fowler said. "It is about safeguarding an important part of Hastings' history and ensuring future generations can continue to connect with the stories of those who served."
As a Poppy Place, the Hastings and District War Memorial Library joins a nationwide network of sites that help keep remembrance visible within communities and encourage New Zealanders to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who came before them.
