About Grey District Library

Grey District Library, at the Heart of the West Coast, serves the main town of Greymouth and the wider district. It is an oasis where you can read, relax, find information, study, and mingle.

The Library holds numerous collections, including special resources detailing the rich and rugged history of the region.

The Māori name of the Greymouth area - named after Governor Grey - is Māwhera, which means ‘widespread, open’ and refers to the broad mouth of the Grey River (Māwheranui).
