Te Pātaka Kōrero o Moerā: A Modern Hub Rooted in Tradition

What began as scheduled repairs for a tired old library blossomed into a complete rebuild at a lower cost. Te Pātaka Kōrero o Moerā, the Moerā Neighbourhood Hub opened in March 2025 as a stunning, modern space designed with cost effectiveness, flexibility and manaakitanga at its core.
More than a library, the Hub embodies a new era of flexible, sustainable public infrastructure. With a footprint 30% larger than the original, its modular design offers not just more space but future-proof adaptability. Built on a tight $1.3 million budget – less than the cost of refurbishment – it’s a case study in cost-effective excellence. Elevated for climate resilience and fully relocatable, this building isn’t just beautiful, it’s sensible.
The cultural narrative is at the heart of the Hub. Through a close partnership with Mana Whenua, its design incorporates Māori values and rich local history. Artist Chevron Hassett’s bespoke artworks weave together patterns that honour whakapapa, guardianship, and the deep connections between land, water and people. Every element from the carvings to the haumi-inspired decking tells a story.
Since opening, the Moerā Hub has more than doubled in usage, becoming a beloved destination for learning, connection, and community pride. Locals flock to its colourful, inviting interior, where flexible spaces and open sightlines invite participation. It’s not just a place to borrow books it’s a gathering place, a sanctuary, a launchpad for future potential.
Moerā’s new hub reflects what libraries can be: responsive, rooted in place, and deeply valued. It’s not only a triumph of design and delivery but a living symbol of whanaungatanga the power of community coming together.
