The opening of Te Ara Ātea, a multipurpose public library, community, and cultural facility in Rolleston in December 2021 has provided a sustained boost to users in the Selwyn District, more than doubling the number of visits to the former Rolleston Library and Service Centre over the three years since it opened. The facility was planned based on predicted population growth and demand, and visits have demonstrated this demand. Meanwhile, visits to the Lincoln, Leeston and Darfield Libraries and Service Centres remained steady.
The opening of Te Ara Ātea amply demonstrates the positive impact that a new library can have to its community, and the understanding of demand that goes in to planning a new facility.
