Across Aotearoa, libraries are evolving into dynamic community spaces, offering everything from creative workshops to digital support for essential services.

Rob Baigent, Chair of Public Libraries New Zealand (PLNZ) and Head of Digital Services for Hamilton Libraries, says today’s libraries are no longer about silence and 'shushing' — they are vibrant places connecting people from all walks of life.

Baigent highlights the essential role libraries play, filling gaps left by other services and becoming safe spaces for learning, support, and community wellbeing. However, he warns funding pressures are growing, and strong advocacy is needed.

"Libraries are precious taonga. We need to get buy-in from councils – both elected members and staff – to demonstrate library services are the civic heart of our communities," says Baigent.

Despite challenges, the sector is thriving, with library membership and event attendance rising steadily. There are now 1.4 million borrowers nationwide, making up 28% of the population.
